Historical Perspective

Chamberlain High School first started Cross Country in 1966 for the boys, and 1976 for the girls. The school has fielded some outstanding runners. In 1970 and 1971, the Chamberlain Boys Cross Country team won state championships. The Girls team won  state championships in 2003, 2005 and 2008.

Over the past 37 seasons the Cross Country teams combined to win over 192 team championships, and over 2489 individual varsity medals.  Chamberlain has had 5 individual State Champions, 3 of which held State Records.  The harriers have won 22  All-State Awards.  In 2001 (T. Jay Sanderson), 2004 (Gene Morrison), and 2015 (Ella Byers) made the All-American designation.

The coach, Garry Winter, ran on the Cubs’ 1970 State Championship team. He is a graduate of Black Hills State University, and has been the Cross Country coach since 1979.
